Electric Utility Safety: Training & Accident Classification

  • A western utility has a five-year cycle for hands-on defensive driving training, with additional courses on distractive driving, rural road, and foul weather driving in between.

  • A southeast utility recently started a three-tiered approach to classifying drivers based upon amount of time driven or driving incidents.  Other utilities have similar processes for adjusting the classification.

    • A western utility has a review committee that assesses incidents and determines their severity level.

    • An eastern utility removes its transportation and fleet department from determining fault in accidents.

  • A western utility is using telematics data and considering implementing in-cab camera technology to monitor driving behaviors and improve safety.​
